Is God A Jealous God?
Yes, He is… but in a very good way. “You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,”
Exodus 20:5 ESV I had my share of being jealous - quite a few times already. I think, envious would be a better word for it. However, when those times occur, I cannot continue with it - I get rebuked! Everytime I start to question the Lord about my difficulties, comparing my situation against the success of other christians and some people - I can sense the Holy Spirit telling me (in a bit angry way) to stop doing it immediately. I would then ask God for forgiveness. It is like the Holy Spirit is saying - Be content of what you have. You are in where you are right now because of the consequences of what you have done and still - God has a purpose for you. Do you know that it is an insult to me when you start questioning my faithfulness? I have my own purpose for your life. What a kicker! :) But with the Lord, His jealousy is different… Then the LORD became jealous for his land and had pity on his people.
Joel 2:18 ESV Thus says the LORD of hosts: I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath.
Zechariah 8:2 ESV Did you see the significant and key three (3) letter word modifying each instance of jealousy? A very big difference exists between being jealous of someone and being jealous for someone. Jealousy of someone is a selfish, envious desire for what that person has or possesses. Jealousy for someone is a selfless, loving desire for that person to have and to be the best. Isn’t this amazing? God is jealous on our behalf. He is jealous for us to know the one true God. He is jealous for us to be in the position of blessing. He is jealous for us to be kept from the evil one. And He is jealous for us to be ready for His coming. Remember: Jealousy for someone’s best is godly. Jealousy of someone’s best is sin. |
